Summary

Canadian schools offer some passive support for active transportation, but few active programs exist. Rural schools and secondary schools face more barriers to children walking or cycling to school.

Background:

Active transportation to school offers significant physical activity opportunities for children.
Understanding school policies, programs, and environments is crucial for promoting active travel.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe active transportation policies, programs, and built environments in Canadian schools.
To examine variations in these factors based on urban-rural location and school type.

Main Methods:

Surveyed 397 Canadian schools using administrator questionnaires.
Assessed school policies, programs, neighborhood safety, and aesthetics.
Utilized geographic information systems to measure built environment features within a 1 km radius.

Main Results:

Over 70% of schools had passive policies/facilities for active transport; less than 40% had active programs.
Neighborhood safety issues (e.g., garbage, crime) were common barriers.
Secondary and rural schools reported less favorable policies, programs, and built environments compared to primary and urban schools, respectively.

Conclusions:

Canadian children encounter numerous obstacles to active transportation for school travel.
Rural and secondary school settings present particular challenges that need addressing.
