Summary

Eccentrically-biased rehabilitation programs show significant improvements in physical function and muscle strength after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). This approach may accelerate recovery and enhance outcomes for TKA patients.

  • Significant improvements in physical function: SF-36 PCS (59%) and 6-minute walk test (47%).
  • Substantial increases in muscle function: knee extension strength (107%) and power (93%).

Conclusions:

  • Eccentrically-biased exercise, as an adjunct to TKA rehabilitation, can amplify and accelerate physical function recovery.
  • This targeted approach shows promise for improving long-term outcomes in TKA patients.
