Trichomoniasis

Trichomonas vaginalis is a flagellated protozoan parasite and the causative agent of trichomoniasis, one of the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted infections in the United States. This extracellular parasite primarily colonizes the lower genitourinary tract in women—particularly the vagina—and in men, the urethra and prostate. Its structural and functional adaptations enable its survival, motility, and pathogenicity within the host environment.Structural Features and Host EntryT.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Proliferating trichilemmal tumor (PTT) is an uncommon skin neoplasm.
  • It originates from the follicular isthmus and is characterized by trichilemmal keratinization.

Observation:

  • PTT typically presents as a solitary nodule on the scalp.
  • The affected demographic is usually elderly women.

Findings:

  • This case report describes a PTT located on the gluteal region (buttocks).
  • The patient was a 16-year-old female, representing a unique demographic and location for PTT.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical and anatomical spectrum of proliferating trichilemmal tumors.
  • It highlights the importance of considering PTT in younger patients with atypical lesion locations.
