Background:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research requires understanding occupational risk factors.
  • A comprehensive job exposure matrix (JEM) for electric shocks and magnetic fields (MF) is needed to evaluate these risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a job exposure matrix (JEM) that quantifies electric shock exposures across various occupations.
  • To facilitate the assessment of potential associations between electric shock exposure and neurodegenerative diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Created a JEM by integrating data on electric shocks and electrocutions from two sources.
  • Incorporated expert judgment to assign ordinal electric-shock exposure levels for 501 job titles.
  • Integrated the electric shock JEM with an existing magnetic field (MF) JEM.

Main Results:

  • Precision production, craft, and repair occupations showed the highest incidence of electric shocks.
  • Electrical apprentices, mechanic and repairer helpers, hoist and winch operators, and electrical power installers had the highest shock proportions.
  • Administrative support, data-key entry, and waiting occupations had low electric shock exposures.

Conclusions:

  • A viable method for constructing an electric shock and MF JEM involves combining public data with expert input.
  • The developed JEM enables the evaluation of associations between occupational electric shock exposure and neurodegenerative diseases.
  • This research provides a foundation for future studies on electric shock risks in the workplace.
