Bipolar Disorder01:30

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition marked by significant mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania and depression. Elevated energy levels, heightened mood or irritability, impulsive behavior, reduced sleep needs, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and distractibility characterize mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often alternate between depressive and manic states, with periods of emotional stability lasting an average of six months to a year.

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

Mania and Antimanic Drugs: Overview

Mania, a psychological condition characterized by elevated mood, increased energy, and reduced sleep need, is part of the bipolar disorder cycle. The exact cause of mania isn't entirely known, but it is thought to be a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Bipolar disorder involves alternating manic and depressive episodes. Mood stabilizers like lithium, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants help manage these episodes. Lithium carbonate is particularly effective as a...
Socioemotional Development during Infancy01:30

Socioemotional Development during Infancy

Socio-emotional development in infancy is primarily shaped by early emotional responses and social connections, with temperament playing a central role. Temperament refers to the consistent patterns in an individual's emotional and behavioral responses, observable even in infancy. By examining temperament, researchers can better understand an infant's unique ways of interacting with the world, influencing subsequent personality and socio-emotional growth.

Dark Triad and Person Perception01:29

Dark Triad and Person Perception

Person perception is influenced by both external behaviors and the observer’s internal characteristics, including personality traits. Individuals with dark personality traits, comprising psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and narcissism — collectively known as the dark triad – exhibit manipulative and exploitative tendencies in social contexts. These traits affect how they perceive others and how they are perceived. The Role of Dark Personality Traits in Person PerceptionBlack et al. (2014) explored...

Summary

Daily light exposure is linked to mood and temperament. Cyclothymic temperament decreased with more light, while hyperthymic temperament increased, suggesting personalized light therapy approaches.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Chronobiology
  • Mood Disorders

Background:

  • Ambient light exposure is linked to mood states and mood disorders.
  • Affective disposition is associated with mood disorders.
  • Temperament traits may be influenced by environmental factors like light.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between daily light exposure and various temperaments.
  • To examine associations between light exposure and cyclothymic, hyperthymic, depressive, irritable, and anxious temperaments.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-six healthy subjects participated in the study.
  • The Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-auto questionnaire version (TEMPS-A) was used.
  • Daytime illuminance was measured using actigraphy.

Main Results:

  • Cyclothymic temperament scores showed a significant negative association with daytime illuminance.
  • Hyperthymic temperament scores demonstrated a significant positive association with daytime illuminance.

Conclusions:

  • Daytime illuminance may be inversely related to cyclothymic temperament and directly related to hyperthymic temperament.
  • Individual temperaments should be considered when using light therapy for depressive episodes.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind these associations.
