Summary

Even after a 24-hour call shift, sleep-deprived surgical trainees maintained technical skills and learned new tasks. Increased sleepiness and workload did not impair performance.

Background:

  • Conflicting reports exist on the impact of moderate sleep deprivation on surgical proficiency.
  • This study investigated the effects of a 24-hour call shift on surgical skills and learning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of sleep deprivation on technical and cognitive functions in surgical trainees.
  • To assess the ability of sleep-deprived individuals to learn a new surgical skill.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-one students trained to expert level on a virtual reality surgical simulator.
  • Participants were randomized into control and sleep-deprived groups.
  • Fatigue and cognitive workload were measured using validated scales.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in performance or learning of surgical tasks were observed between groups.
  • Sleep-deprived trainees reported increased sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale).
  • Subjective mental workload increased in the sleep-deprived group (NASA-TLX).

Conclusions:

  • Sleep deprivation did not impede the performance or learning of surgical tasks.
  • Trainees successfully acquired new skills despite subjective increases in sleepiness and workload.
