Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of PTSS in acute leukemia patients.
  • To identify correlates of PTSS in this population.
  • To examine the psychological impact of acute leukemia.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited patients with acute myeloid, lymphocytic, and promyelocytic leukemia.
  • Administered the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire and other psychosocial measures.
  • Utilized multivariate regression to identify predictors of PTSS.

Main Results:

  • 14% of patients met criteria for acute stress disorder; 18% had subsyndromal symptoms.
  • PTSS were associated with increased physical symptoms and distress.
  • Attachment anxiety, communication difficulties, and lower spiritual well-being correlated with PTSS.

Conclusions:

  • Clinically significant PTSS are prevalent in acute leukemia.
  • PTSS are linked to physical suffering, healthcare provider relationships, and psychological factors.
  • Interventions may be necessary to manage or prevent traumatic stress in this patient group.
