- A cohort study compared outcomes in 262 deaf children (pre-lingual profound hearing loss).
- 28 children had MDD (GMFC levels 1-3); severe motor or cognitive delays were excluded.
- Speech perception (CAP) and intelligibility (SIR) were assessed pre-surgery and 24 months post-activation.

- Cochlear implants significantly improved CAP scores in all children (P=0.001).
- Post-surgery CAP scores were 5.03 for MDD and 5.77 for NMD children.
- Post-surgery SIR scores were 2.53 for MDD and 2.66 for NMD children.
- No significant differences in CAP or SIR scores were found between MDD and NMD groups (P>0.05).
Conclusions:
- Children with hearing loss and concomitant MDD benefit from cochlear implantation.
- Outcomes are comparable to those with normal motor development, supporting cochlear implant candidacy for this population.
