Summary
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare duodenal tumors. Surgical resection is effective for localized GISTs, with partial duodenectomy being a viable oncologic option.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Oncology
- Oncology
Background:
- Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are uncommon malignancies arising in the digestive tract.
- Duodenal GISTs represent a small subset, approximately 4.5% of all GISTs.
- Historically misdiagnosed as leiomyomas or leiomyosarcomas.
Observation:
- A case of a patient presenting with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Radiological imaging revealed a tumor in the third portion of the duodenum.
- The patient underwent a successful segmental duodenectomy.
Findings:
- Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a GIST.
- The patient has remained recurrence-free for one year post-surgery.
Implications:
- Surgical resection is the primary treatment for localized GISTs.
- Partial duodenectomy is a feasible alternative to more extensive procedures like duodenopancreatectomy for duodenal GISTs.
- This case underscores the importance of considering GIST in the differential diagnosis of duodenal tumors presenting with bleeding.
