Summary
Gingival recession treatments show varied esthetic outcomes one year post-surgery. While complete root coverage is achievable, the Root Coverage Esthetic Score (RES) system reveals many cases don't reach maximum esthetic potential.
Area of Science:
- Periodontology
- Esthetic Dentistry
Background:
- Gingival recession affects numerous patients, impacting oral health and aesthetics.
- Various surgical techniques aim to achieve root coverage and improve esthetics.
Purpose of the Study:
- To perform a 1-year esthetic evaluation of gingival recession treatments.
- To assess outcomes using the Root Coverage Esthetic Score (RES) system.
Main Methods:
- 195 single or multiple gingival recessions in 100 patients were treated.
- Surgical techniques included coronally advanced flaps with/without connective tissue grafting and free gingival grafts.
- Esthetic outcomes were evaluated after 1 year using the RES system.
Main Results:
- Only 11% of treated recessions achieved the maximum RES score of 10.
- 35% of recessions achieved complete root coverage but received lower RES scores.
- Coronally advanced flaps (with or without connective tissue grafting) yielded similar RES scores for single and multiple recessions.
- Free gingival grafts resulted in the lowest RES scores.
Conclusions:
- The Root Coverage Esthetic Score (RES) system provides a comprehensive esthetic evaluation beyond just root coverage.
- Coronally advanced flap techniques demonstrate comparable esthetic results.
- Free gingival grafts appear less favorable for achieving optimal esthetic outcomes in gingival recession treatment.
