Summary

This study shows that the late positive potential (LPP) in children, an electrical brain response, is larger for emotional pictures. This brain activity is linked to temperamental fear and anxiety in young children.

Background:

  • The late positive potential (LPP) is an electrophysiological measure indicating heightened attention to emotional stimuli in adults.
  • Limited research exists on the LPP in children and its relation to individual differences in emotionality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the LPP response to emotional stimuli in typically developing children aged 5–7 years.
  • To explore the association between LPP amplitudes and dispositional characteristics like temperamental fear and anxiety.

Main Methods:

  • 39 typically developing children (5–7 years old) passively viewed emotional and neutral images.
  • Maternal reports of temperamental fear/anxiety and observed fearful behavior were collected.
  • Electroencephalography (EEG) recorded the late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes.

Main Results:

  • LPP amplitudes were significantly larger for pleasant and unpleasant stimuli compared to neutral stimuli, mirroring adult findings.
  • A larger LPP difference between unpleasant and neutral stimuli correlated with higher observed fear.
