Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Laser Surgery
  • Geriatric Medicine

Background:

  • Involutional entropion involves inward eyelid rotation due to laxity and muscle changes.
  • Elderly patients often have comorbidities, limiting traditional invasive surgical options.
  • Less-invasive treatments are needed for this demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a novel, less-traumatic CO(2) laser resurfacing method for involutional entropion.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of laser-induced tissue shrinkage for entropion repair.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Ultra Pulse CO(2) laser with a computerized pattern generator for eyelid resurfacing.
  • Applied two passes of laser energy to the lower lid and periorbital area, avoiding the lash line on the first pass.

  • Treated five patients with involutional entropion.
  • Main Results:

    • Four out of five patients achieved surgical success, with no entropion recurrence at 5-21 months follow-up.
    • No significant side effects like itching or irritation were reported.
    • No cases of ectropion were observed during long-term follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • CO(2) laser resurfacing is a suitable alternative for treating involutional entropion in elderly patients with comorbidities.
    • This minimally invasive approach provides a safe and effective treatment option.
    • The technique promotes cicatricial changes for eyelid margin stabilization.
