Timogel® vs timolol 0.5% ophthalmic solution: efficacy, safety, and acceptance

Timogel® preservative-free eye drops offer comparable intraocular pressure reduction to timolol 0.5% but with fewer side effects. Patients reported better tolerability and satisfaction with the once-daily Timogel® formulation.

Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of once-daily Timogel® preservative-free versus twice-daily timolol 0.5%.
- To evaluate IOP reduction, side effect profiles, and patient acceptance in glaucoma and ocular hypertension patients.
Main Methods:
- A randomized study involving 75 patients with ocular hypertension (OHT) or primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
- Patients were initially treated with timolol 0.5% twice daily and then switched to Timogel® once daily.
- Evaluations included IOP measurements, side effect assessment, Schirmer test, tear break-up time (BUT), and patient-reported outcomes.
Main Results:
- Both treatments achieved similar IOP reduction (23.6% vs 22.3%).
- Timogel® demonstrated significantly fewer local and systemic side effects.
- Patients experienced improved ocular surface parameters (Schirmer, BUT) and reduced dryness with Timogel®.
- Patient satisfaction was higher with Timogel® (82% vs 61%).
Conclusions:
- Once-daily Timogel® preservative-free provides 24-hour IOP control with a superior safety and tolerability profile compared to timolol 0.5% twice daily.
- The once-daily regimen enhances patient acceptance and compliance.
- Timogel® is a well-accepted alternative for managing glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
