Summary

Thyroid dysfunction affects a quarter of children and adolescents with vitiligo, with Hashimoto's thyroiditis being common. Early screening for thyroid autoantibodies in pediatric vitiligo patients is recommended.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in children and adolescents diagnosed with vitiligo.
  • To identify potential predisposing factors for thyroid dysfunction in this pediatric cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 75 pediatric patients with vitiligo.
  • Inclusion of physical examinations, thyroid ultrasonography, and thyroid function tests.
  • Statistical analysis to compare patient groups.

Main Results:

  • Thyroid parameter alterations were observed in 25.33% of the pediatric vitiligo patients.
  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis was diagnosed in 14.66% of patients, often associated with non-segmental vitiligo.
  • Upper limb vitiligo onset was significantly more frequent in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Conclusions:

  • Thyroid dysfunction is prevalent in children and adolescents with vitiligo.
  • Screening for thyroid autoantibodies is advisable in pediatric patients with vitiligo, as vitiligo may precede thyroid disease.
  • Early detection can facilitate timely management of associated thyroid conditions.
