Background:

  • Brainstem metastases are challenging to treat with conventional methods.
  • Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) has emerged as a viable treatment option.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of GKRS for brainstem metastases.
  • To identify prognostic factors influencing survival after GKRS.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 32 patients treated with GKRS for brainstem metastases (1992-2010).
  • Tumor locations included pons, midbrain, and medulla oblongata.
  • Follow-up via MRI, with survival analysis using Kaplan-Meier method.

Main Results:

  • 87.5% local tumor control rate observed.
  • Mean progression-free survival of 12.2 months.
  • Favorable prognostic factors included Karnofsky performance status >70 and Recursive Partitioning Analysis class 1 or 2.
