Background:

Inductive research designs, like grounded theory, are common in qualitative health research.
Theory-driven designs can sensitize researchers to concepts missed by purely inductive methods.
This study examines the use of a specific theory-driven framework in practice.

Purpose of the Study:

To provide a reflexive account of using the Normalization Process Model (NPM) in qualitative research.
To evaluate the utility of a theory-driven conceptual framework in health services research.
To explore the added value of a "tight" design informed by social theory.

Main Methods:

Qualitative evaluation of general practitioners' uptake of a pilot language interpreting service.
Reflexive account of decisions regarding the use of the Normalization Process Model.
Application of the Normalization Process Model to inform research questions, sampling, coding, and data analysis.
