Background:

  • Microsuction is a common ENT procedure for ear canal cleaning.
  • Patient complaints of hearing loss or tinnitus after microsuction are difficult to objectively assess due to limited noise data.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively measure and analyze noise levels generated by different microsuction devices.
  • To provide reproducible data to aid in evaluating patient complaints related to noise exposure during microsuction.

Main Methods:

  • Noise levels were measured using standardized conditions in an artificial model head.
  • Different suction device diameters were tested.
  • Suctioning of water and lard (as a cerumen simulant) was performed using a noise mediator.

Main Results:

  • Suction device inner diameter significantly influenced noise levels; a 1.4 mm sucker produced over 100 dB(A).
  • Suctioning water reached over 130 dB(LAmax), while lard suctioning peaked near 150 dB(LAmax).
  • Lard suctioning produced a characteristic 'bang' sound with distinct noise and frequency patterns.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides objective, reproducible data on noise levels produced during microsuction.
  • The findings can assist in the medical evaluation of patient complaints regarding hearing damage or tinnitus post-procedure.
