New amidinate-stabilized germatrisilacyclobutadiene ylides were synthesized and characterized. These compounds exhibit a ylide structure, stabilized by ligands and electron delocalization, and are not antiaromatic.
Area of Science:
- Organometallic Chemistry
- Silicon-Germanium Chemistry
- Main Group Chemistry
Background:
- Amidinate ligands offer unique stabilization for reactive main group species.
- Cyclobutadiene systems are of interest due to their electronic properties and aromaticity.
- Understanding silicon-germanium ring systems is crucial for developing novel materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize novel amidinate-stabilized germatrisilacyclobutadiene ylides.
- To investigate the structural and electronic properties of these unique Si-Ge ring systems.
- To determine the aromaticity and bonding characteristics of the synthesized compounds.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis via reactions of silylene and germylene precursors.
- Characterization using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Structural analysis via X-ray crystallography and theoretical studies.
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis of amidinate-stabilized germatrisilacyclobutadiene ylides (compounds 3 and 7).
- Identification of bisamidinate germylene (compound 4) as a byproduct.
- X-ray crystallography and NMR data confirmed the ylide structure with puckered Si3Ge rings.
- Theoretical studies indicated that compounds 3 and 7 are not antiaromatic.
Conclusions:
- Amidinate ligands effectively stabilize germatrisilacyclobutadiene ylides.
- The Si3Ge four-membered rings possess a ylide character.
- Electron delocalization within the ring contributes to the stability of these compounds.
- The synthesized compounds challenge traditional aromaticity rules for small rings.

Stability of Substituted Cyclohexanes
The two chair conformations of cyclohexanes undergo rapid interconversion at room temperature. Both forms have identical energies and stabilities, each comprising equal amounts of the equilibrium mixture. Replacing a hydrogen atom with a functional group makes the two conformations energetically non-equivalent.
