Is chronic rhinosinusitis caused by persistent respiratory virus infection?

This study found no persistent respiratory viruses in the sinonasal mucosa of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients. Therefore, ongoing viral infection is unlikely to cause chronic inflammation in CRS.

- The study did not find evidence of persistent viral presence in CRS.

- Persistent respiratory viruses are unlikely to be a cause of chronic inflammation in CRS.
- Initial transient viral infection remains a possibility for triggering CRS.
