Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the current qualitative and quantitative aspects of research engagement among CLS professionals.
  • To identify scholarly activities and barriers to research participation in various employment settings.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey was distributed to 7,572 members of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS) and 500 program directors.
  • The survey assessed quantitative and qualitative measures of engagement in research and other scholarly activities.

Main Results:

  • Only 7.3% of respondents actively conduct research, while 68% do not. Research is a job requirement for 18%.
  • Many CLS professionals (over 57%) engage in non-research scholarly activities. Applied, clinical, or educational research is most common.
  • Lack of external funding (57%) and barriers like time constraints, inadequate funding, and limited opportunities impede research efforts. PhD holders secure most research funding.

Conclusions:

  • CLS professionals are involved in research at limited numbers, often prioritizing non-research scholarly activities.
  • Significant barriers hinder research participation, including lack of job integration, time, funding, and opportunities.
  • Future research should explore broader professional organizations to increase survey response rates and gain a more comprehensive understanding.
