Post-traumatic tricuspid insufficiency, a rare chest trauma complication, can lead to severe regurgitation years later. In late cases, tricuspid valve replacement with a bioprosthesis may offer the best long-term outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Cardiac Surgery
- Trauma Surgery
Background:
- Post-traumatic tricuspid insufficiency is a rare but significant complication following chest trauma.
- Early diagnosis and management are crucial for preventing long-term sequelae.
Observation:
- An 18-year-old male sustained chest trauma, resulting in a diaphragmatic heart tear repaired surgically.
- Eighteen years post-injury, the patient presented with severe tricuspid regurgitation (3+/4+).
Findings:
- Surgical exploration revealed the tricuspid valve was unsuitable for repair due to degeneration.
- The patient underwent successful tricuspid valve replacement with a bioprosthesis.
Implications:
- While early reconstructive surgery may be feasible, late-stage degeneration often necessitates valve replacement.
- Tricuspid valve replacement with bioprosthesis can provide favorable long-term results in chronic post-traumatic cases.
