Summary

A rare zygomycosis infection caused by Apophysomyces elegans occurred in a burn patient. Aggressive surgical intervention, including leg amputation, was required to manage the extensive tissue invasion by the fungus.

Background:

Zygomycosis is a rare, severe fungal infection.
Burn injuries create a high risk for opportunistic infections.
Apophysomyces elegans is an emerging fungal pathogen.

Observation:

A patient with 25% full-thickness burns developed zygomycosis.
The infection showed rapid and extensive tissue invasion.
The causative agent, Apophysomyces elegans, was identified.

Findings:

The fungal infection rapidly invaded the patient's tissues.
Surgical amputation of the affected leg was necessary for disease control.
Apophysomyces elegans was isolated from the soil in the patient's burn environment, suggesting a source of inoculation.

Implications:

This case highlights the potential for Apophysomyces elegans to cause severe infections in burn patients.
Early recognition and aggressive management are crucial for improving outcomes in zygomycosis.
Environmental fungal contamination poses a significant risk in burn care settings.
