Summary

This case study highlights Kaposi

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Virology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a malignancy strongly associated with Human Herpes Virus 8 (HHV8) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
  • KS was the first malignancy identified in patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Observation:

  • A case of Kaposi's sarcoma is presented in a newly diagnosed HIV-positive homosexual patient with a low CD4 count (21).
  • The patient presented with multiple violaceous plaques and nodules on the face, scalp, palate, trunk, and genitalia.
  • Histopathological examination of skin and gastric mucosa lesions confirmed Kaposi's sarcoma.

Findings:

  • The patient received Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) and cryotherapy for cutaneous lesions.
  • Significant improvement in Kaposi's sarcoma lesions was observed following treatment.
