Children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) show significant tactile deficits, impacting both registration and perception. These sensory impairments in UCP may affect motor function and warrant therapeutic intervention.

Purpose of the Study:
- To comprehensively characterize tactile registration and perception abilities in children with UCP.

- Fifty-two children with UCP and 34 TDC were evaluated using a battery of tactile assessments.
- Tactile registration was assessed using Semmes Weinstein Monofilaments.
- Tactile perception was evaluated through tests including single-point localization, double simultaneous, two-point discrimination, stereognosis, and texture perception.
Main Results:
- Children with UCP demonstrated significantly poorer performance with their impaired hand compared to their unimpaired hand (p < 0.005).
- Both hands of children with UCP performed worse than the hands of TDC (p = 0.037–< 0.001).
- Forty percent of children with UCP had deficits in both tactile registration and perception, 37% had only perception deficits, and 23% had no tactile deficits. A larger tactile registration deficit correlated with poorer tactile perception (r = 0.568–0.670; p < 0.001).
Conclusions:
- The majority of children with UCP exhibit impaired tactile perception, with over a third also having impaired tactile registration.
- Tactile dysfunction in UCP is prevalent and may significantly contribute to overall functional limitations.
- Addressing tactile impairments through targeted interventions could potentially improve functional outcomes and motor abilities in children with UCP.
