  • Effective falls prevention requires multi-component interventions.
  • Senior centers are key community resources for older adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of multi-component falls prevention education in senior centers.
  • To identify barriers senior centers face in implementing this education.

Main Methods:

  • A national telephone survey of 500 senior centers was conducted in 2006.
  • Center directors reported on education components offered (balance exercise, medication management, home safety).
  • Barriers to implementation were also assessed.

Main Results:

  • 70% offered balance exercise, 68% medication management, 53% home safety.
  • Only 32% provided all three components.
  • Key barriers included lack of staff, time, and perceived insufficient staff knowledge.

Conclusions:

  • Senior centers deliver essential falls prevention education components.
  • Gaps exist in offering comprehensive, multi-component programs.
  • Existing resources within senior centers can be leveraged to implement evidence-based falls prevention strategies.
