Summary

Epilepsy surgery significantly improved sleep quality in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy by reducing seizures and epileptiform abnormalities. Sleep architecture, particularly REM sleep, showed notable improvements one year post-operation.

  • Interictal epileptiform abnormalities (IEAs) and sleep macrostructure were assessed at each visit, with stable AEDs.
  • Main Results:

    • A reduction in IEAs was observed in all patients post-surgery.
    • Significant increases in total sleep time and REM sleep occurred at the 1-year follow-up (p=0.032 and p=0.006).
    • A significant increase in REM sleep was noted at the 2-year follow-up (p=0.028), with most changes observed within the first year.

    Conclusions:

    • Epilepsy surgery can enhance sleep macrostructure in temporal lobe epilepsy patients.
    • Reducing seizure frequency and IEAs post-surgery leads to improved sleep.
    • These findings underscore the chronic disruptive role of epilepsy on sleep organization.
