Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) causes significant disability, necessitating effective rehabilitation strategies for functional recovery.
  • Gait impairment is a common and disabling consequence of MS, impacting quality of life.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of a combined exercise program on walking function in individuals with MS.
  • To assess changes in gait impairment following an 8-week multimodal exercise intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study involving 13 participants with moderate to severe MS (EDSS 4.0-6.0) and recent gait impairment.
  • An 8-week supervised exercise program combining aerobic, resistance, and balance training, 3 days/week.
  • Outcome measures included the MS Walking Scale-12, Timed 25-Foot Walk, Timed Up & Go, and GaitRite functional ambulation profile.

  • This rehabilitation approach shows promise for managing gait impairment in early-stage MS-related disability.
