Summary

Providing information and advice during disability evaluations significantly boosts return to work (RTW) rates for low back pain (LBP) claimants. This intervention reduces sick leave recurrence, promoting earlier and safer return to employment.

Background:

Evidence supports advice for subacute low back pain (LBP).
The impact of informational interventions on return to work (RTW) for sickness benefit recipients remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the effect of information and advice during disability evaluations on RTW rates.
To determine the impact on sick leave recurrence in low back pain (LBP) claimants.

Main Methods:

A single-blinded, randomized controlled trial involving 506 claimants with LBP.
Participants were assigned to either standard disability evaluation or evaluation with added counseling and information.
Outcomes measured included RTW, sick leave recurrence, surgery, and duration over 12 months.

Treating Low Back Pain in Failed Back Surgery Patients with Multicolumn-lead Spinal Cord Stimulation

Main Results:

The intervention group demonstrated a statistically significant higher RTW rate at 1 year.
This improvement was primarily driven by a lower relapse rate (38%) compared to the control group (60%).
No significant differences were observed in subsequent surgery or sick leave duration between groups.

Conclusions:

Routine reassurance and advice regarding LBP are recommended during disability evaluations.
This approach facilitates early and safe return to work (RTW).
Intervention aims to mitigate negative effects associated with prolonged sick leave.
