  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is associated with immune dysregulation.
  • Methamphetamine (METH) use is prevalent among populations at risk for or living with HIV.
  • The combined effects of HIV and METH on plasma proteomes are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of ongoing methamphetamine use on plasma protein expression in HIV-infected individuals.
  • To differentiate protein changes attributable to METH use from those caused by HIV infection.

  • Plasma samples were collected from four groups: HIV-positive with persistent METH use, HIV-positive with short-term METH abstinence, HIV-positive with long-term METH abstinence, and HIV-negative with no METH history.

  • Proteomic analysis was performed to identify and quantify plasma proteins.
  • Statistical analysis was used to identify significant changes in protein expression between groups and over time.
