  • Behavioral Weight Management Programs (BWMPs) offer a potential solution, but their cost-effectiveness requires evaluation from an employer's perspective.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the cost-effectiveness ratios of a nursing home-based incentivized BWMP.
  • To evaluate the business case for implementing such programs from an employer's viewpoint.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 72 overweight/obese healthcare workers participated in a 28-week BWMP, with 35 receiving incentives and 37 not.
  • Weight changes were compared pre- and post-intervention, within and between incentivized and non-incentivized groups.
  • Direct program costs and estimated avoided costs (absenteeism, productivity) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The incentivized group achieved a significantly greater average weight loss (-7.4 lb) compared to the non-incentivized group (-2.2 lb; P = 0.01).
  • Cost-effectiveness ratios per pound of weight loss were $25.5 for incentivized programs and $58.1 for non-incentivized programs.

Conclusions:

  • Incentivized BWMPs demonstrate superior cost-effectiveness compared to non-incentivized programs in this nursing home setting.
  • Enhancements in employee productivity are crucial for establishing a strong business case; further research is recommended.
