Summary

Function-focused care (FFC) interventions in assisted living (AL) communities did not increase the risk of falls or injuries. This research supports the safety of promoting physical activity and optimizing function in older adults.

Background:

Falls and injuries are significant concerns in assisted living (AL) communities, impacting resident safety and quality of life.
Function-focused care (FFC) interventions aim to optimize physical function and promote activity in older adults, but their safety regarding fall risk requires investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the incidence of falls and injuries in AL communities.
To determine if an FFC intervention increases the risk of falls or injuries among AL residents.

Main Methods:

Secondary data analysis of a 12-month cluster-randomized controlled trial involving four AL communities.
Communities were matched and randomly assigned to FFC-AL or an attention control (education-only) group.
Logistic regression was used to analyze data on falls, injuries, and other health and functional outcomes.

Main Results:

Exposure to the FFC-AL intervention did not significantly increase the likelihood of falling (p = .96).
The FFC-AL intervention did not significantly increase the likelihood of sustaining an injury (p = .35).

Conclusions:

FFC interventions are safe and do not elevate the risk of falls or injuries in AL settings.
Findings support the use of FFC interventions to enhance function and physical activity in older adults residing in AL communities.
