Temporary pacing (TP) is widely available in Danish hospitals, primarily using transvenous methods. TP is most frequently used for acute myocardial infarction patients with severe heart block.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Technology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • A 1986 questionnaire survey assessed temporary pacing (TP) practices in Danish hospitals.
  • Seventy-four of 77 hospitals with cardiology specialists provided usable data on TP availability and methods.

Observation:

  • Temporary pacing facilities were available in 53% of responding hospitals.
  • Transvenous pacing was the predominant method (33 hospitals), followed by transcutaneous pacing (13 hospitals).
  • Disposable pacing catheters were used in over 85% of cases.

Findings:

  • A total of 486 patients received temporary pacing.
  • TP use in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients averaged 3.7%.
  • Hospitals with cardiac labs demonstrated higher TP activity, particularly for AMI with third-degree atrioventricular block and ventricular escape rhythm.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Transvenous pacing via the subclavian vein was the routine approach in most facilities.
  • TP use varied significantly based on AMI complications, being highest in severe heart block and lowest in asymptomatic bifascicular block.
  • Findings highlight the role of TP in managing acute cardiac events and suggest a correlation between advanced cardiac facilities and TP utilization.
