Despite strict laws, drinking and driving is prevalent in Vietnam. A study found nearly half of road users admitted to drinking and driving, especially young males, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Transportation Safety
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death in Vietnam, with alcohol involvement in crashes being a significant issue.
- Despite stringent alcohol legislation, high rates of alcohol-related road traffic crashes persist.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) regarding alcohol use and drinking and driving.
- To analyze these KAPs by age and sex in three Vietnamese provinces.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey of 633 road users aged 17+ was conducted in January-February 2011.
- Data were collected via a KAP survey administered at gas stations across Ha Nam, Ninh Binh, and Bac Giang provinces.
Main Results:
- 44.9% of respondents reported drinking and driving; 56.7% did so in the past month.
- Drinking and driving was more common in males (60.2%), particularly males aged 17-26 (71.4%).
- Preferred alternatives included traveling with a sober driver (42%), resting (23%), or drinking less (20%).
Conclusions:
- Alcohol use and drinking and driving remain a significant public health and safety concern in Vietnam.
- A multifaceted approach is needed, including public education, stricter enforcement, and promoting alternatives to drinking and driving.
