Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Mycology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Pulmonary aspergilloma is a fungal infection in pre-existing lung cavities.
  • Anatomical resection is the standard surgical treatment.
  • Increasing frequency of simple aspergillomas necessitates evaluating conservative approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify characteristics of aspergillomas suitable for conservative surgery.
  • To assess the efficacy of conservative surgical techniques for pulmonary aspergilloma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 64 surgically treated pulmonary aspergilloma cases.
  • Data collected from 1984 to 2008 at a thoracic surgery unit.
  • Comparison of outcomes between conservative and anatomical resections.

Thoracoscopic Extended Right Middle Plus Lower Sleeve Lobectomy for Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer

Published on: February 27, 2026

Main Results:

  • 14 patients underwent conservative (atypical) resection; 50 had anatomical resection.
  • Perioperative mortality rate was 5%.
  • One recurrence of aspergilloma occurred after conservative surgery for a complex case.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical intervention remains the sole effective treatment for pulmonary aspergilloma.
  • Conservative surgery is a suitable alternative for simple, peripheral aspergillomas <4cm.
  • Careful patient selection is crucial for successful conservative surgical outcomes.
