This study developed software using fuzzy logic to assess nursing student diagnoses against specialist standards. The tool showed satisfactory technical quality and aided student learning in nursing diagnosis.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Education
- Medical Informatics
- Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
Background:
- Accurate nursing diagnosis is crucial for effective patient care.
- Traditional methods for evaluating nursing diagnostic skills can be subjective and time-consuming.
- There is a need for objective tools to support nursing education and skill development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate software for verifying the accuracy of nursing diagnoses made by students.
- To utilize fuzzy logic concepts for creating a model that compares student-generated diagnoses with specialist standards.
- To assess the software's technical quality and usability as an educational tool.
Main Methods:
- Development of software based on fuzzy logic, PERL, MySQL, and the NANDA-I 2007-2008 classification system.
- Implementation of a four-stage activity where students link nursing diagnoses, characteristics/risk factors, and clinical cases.
- Evaluation of software technical quality and usability using specific instruments.
- Comparison of student-derived relationship values with those of specialists to generate performance scores.
Main Results:
- The software demonstrated satisfactory technical quality during evaluation.
- Students reported that the software aided their learning process.
- The system successfully generated performance scores by comparing student and specialist values.
Conclusions:
- The developed software is a technically sound tool for evaluating nursing student diagnoses.
- The software has the potential to be an effective educational resource for teaching the nursing diagnosis process.
- Further integration into nursing curricula could enhance diagnostic skill development.
