Modeling Spontaneous Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma (mRCC) in Mice Following Nephrectomy

Background:

  • Renal tumors can be incidentally discovered during routine medical check-ups.
  • Carcinoid tumors are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms that can occur in various organs, including the kidney.

Observation:

  • A 6.0 cm calcified solid tumor was identified in the right kidney of a 38-year-old woman.
  • The tumor showed no enhancement on computed tomography (CT) and no signs of extrarenal invasion or metastasis.

Findings:

  • Pathological diagnosis confirmed a renal carcinoid tumor with characteristic trabecular and ribbon-like structures.
  • Immunohistochemical staining was positive for chromogranin A, synaptophysin, and CD56, with a low Ki67 proliferation index (<1%).
  • Extensive investigations, including endoscopy and CT scans, did not reveal any primary carcinoid tumor elsewhere in the body.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses like renal carcinoid tumors in incidentally discovered renal masses.
  • Laparoscopic nephrectomy is a viable treatment option for localized renal carcinoid tumors.
  • Long-term follow-up is crucial to monitor for potential recurrence or metastasis of renal carcinoid tumors.
