    Summary

Bronchial mucous gland tumors, rare lung neoplasms, present diverse types including adenoid cystic carcinomas and muco-epidermoid tumors. Complete excision offers a good prognosis, especially for younger patients with muco-epidermoid types.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Bronchial mucous gland tumors are rare, comprising less than 0.5% of all lung tumors.
    • These tumors share histological similarities with salivary gland tumors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review and classify five types of bronchial mucous gland tumors.
    • To analyze clinical features and postoperative outcomes.
    • To consider the histogenesis of these rare lung neoplasms.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of 26 bronchial mucous gland tumors.
    • Classification into adenoid cystic carcinomas, muco-epidermoid tumors, mixed tumors, cystadenomas, and oxyphilic adenoma.
    • Analysis of clinical presentations and patient follow-up.

    Main Results:

    • Adenoid cystic carcinomas often infiltrate adjacent trachea.
    • Muco-epidermoid tumors predominantly affect young individuals; malignancy is rare and associated with older age.
    • Mixed tumors showed malignant potential, with one metastasis.
    • Cystadenomas were benign, though two had papillary proliferation.
    • An oxyphil cell adenoma was found incidentally post-mortem.

    Conclusions:

    • Bronchial mucous gland tumors exhibit diverse histological types and clinical behaviors.
    • Prognosis is favorable for young patients with completely resected muco-epidermoid tumors.
    • Further investigation into histogenesis is warranted.
