Summary
We demonstrate an efficient room-temperature Er3+:GdVO4 laser operating at 1598.5 nm. This study presents the first resonantly pumped, in-band, room-temperature Er3+:GdVO4 laser, achieving significant output power.
Area of Science:
- Laser physics
- Solid-state materials
- Optical engineering
Background:
- Erbium-doped gadolinium vanadate (Er3+:GdVO4) is a promising material for laser applications.
- Resonant (in-band) pumping can improve laser efficiency by reducing thermal load and increasing pump absorption.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report the first resonantly pumped, room-temperature operation of an Er3+:GdVO4 laser.
- To characterize the laser performance under different pumping schemes.
Main Methods:
- The Er3+:GdVO4 crystal was pumped resonantly using an Er-fiber laser at 1538.6 nm for continuous wave (CW) operation.
- Quasi-continuous wave (QCW) operation was achieved using a commercial laser diode bar stack.
- Laser output power and slope efficiency were measured.
Main Results:
- Continuous wave (CW) operation yielded a maximum output power of 3.5 W with a slope efficiency of 56% under resonant pumping.
- Quasi-continuous wave (QCW) operation produced 7.7 W with a slope efficiency of approximately 53% versus absorbed pump power.
- The laser operated efficiently at room temperature without active cooling.
Conclusions:
- Efficient room-temperature operation of a resonantly pumped Er3+:GdVO4 laser at 1598.5 nm has been achieved.
- Resonant pumping offers a viable and efficient method for exciting Er3+:GdVO4 lasers.
- This work establishes a new benchmark for in-band pumped, room-temperature solid-state lasers.
