Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess current radon testing rates in primary care patients.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a basic intervention to increase radon testing.

Main Methods:

  • Surveys were administered to 692 patients at two Minneapolis primary care clinics.
  • An intervention group (250 participants) received educational materials, a discount coupon, and provider encouragement.
  • Follow-up data was collected to measure testing behavior.

Main Results:

  • Only 24.7% of surveyed patients had ever tested their homes for radon.
  • Higher income, education, and non-smoking households showed higher testing rates.
  • The intervention resulted in only 14.4% of participants testing their homes within a year.

Conclusions:

  • Current radon testing rates are low, even with basic interventions.
  • More intensive interventions, such as on-site test kit provision or multiple visits, may be necessary.
