Summary

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) did not reduce mortality or amputation rates in patients with necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs). Further evidence is needed before HBO becomes standard care for NSTIs, and it should never delay surgery.

Background:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is an adjunctive treatment for NSTIs, but its efficacy is not well-established.
  • This study investigated the impact of HBO on mortality and amputation rates in NSTI patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) as an adjunctive treatment for necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs).
  • To determine if HBO influences in-hospital mortality or extremity amputation rates in patients with NSTIs.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 80 patients diagnosed with NSTI between 2005 and 2009.
  • Comparison of in-hospital mortality and extremity amputation rates between patients who received HBO and those who did not.
  • Statistical analysis using Mann-Whitney, chi-square, and Fisher's exact tests, with significance set at P < 0.05.

  • Consideration of HBO should not delay essential operative therapy for NSTIs.
  • Further research is required to establish the efficacy of HBO as a standard treatment for NSTIs.
