Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) impacts social communication.
Understanding linguistic adjustments in children with autism is crucial for intervention.
Previous research highlights challenges in reciprocal communication for individuals with ASD.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate linguistic adjustments in children with autism during dyadic conversations.
To assess conversational linkage and utterance-by-utterance resonance in children with and without autism.
To explore the relationship between cognitive linkage and emotional connectedness in children with autism.

Main Methods:

Two novel measures were developed to assess conversational linkage and dialogic resonance.
Dialogue analysis was conducted between adults and matched children with and without autism (n=12 per group).
Correlation analysis examined the link between cognitive linkage and emotional connectedness.

Main Results:

Children with autism demonstrated reduced ability to establish 'cognitive linkage' with their conversational partner.
A positive correlation was found between cognitive linkage and emotional connectedness specifically in children with autism.
Participants with autism did not differ in basic dialogic resonance ('frame grab') but showed atypical response elaboration.

Conclusions:

Children with autism exhibit distinct patterns of linguistic adjustment in conversation, particularly in establishing cognitive linkage.
Emotional connectedness in children with autism may be closely tied to their ability to align with a partner's meaning.
While basic conversational flow is maintained, the elaboration of responses in children with autism can be atypical.
