Establishing a Severe Corneal Inflammation Model in Rats Based on Corneal Epithelium Curettage Combined with Corneal Sutures

  • While typically limited to the skin, rare cases involve mucosal surfaces.

Observation:

  • A woman presented with a whitish, indurated plaque on her oral mucosa, affecting the hard palate and upper vestibular region.
  • This led to dental mobility and root exposure of several teeth.

Findings:

  • Cone beam computed tomography revealed bone resorption in the maxilla.
  • Microscopy showed epithelial atrophy, dermal fibrosis extending into the submucosa, and hyalinization of subepithelial collagen.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known clinical spectrum of morphea.
  • It represents the first documented instance of isolated oral morphea.
  • Early recognition is crucial to prevent significant local oral complications and manage dental issues.
