Anatomy of the Ear01:16

Anatomy of the Ear

Auditory sensation, commonly called hearing, involves the transformation of sonic waves into neural impulses facilitated by the structures of the auditory organ. The prominent, flesh-like structure on the side of the head, called the auricle, directs sound waves towards the auditory canal. The auricle is often mislabeled as the pinna, a term more aligned with mobile structures like a feline's external ear. The auditory canal penetrates the cranium via the external auditory meatus of the...

Accessory Structures of the Skin: Sebaceous Glands

A sebaceous gland is a type of oil gland found almost all over the skin ( except palms and soles) and helps lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair. Most sebaceous glands are associated with hair follicles. They generate and excrete sebum, a mixture of lipids, onto the skin surface, thereby naturally lubricating the dry and dead layer of keratinized cells of the stratum corneum, keeping it pliable.
These glands that produce the oils on the skin and hair are holocrine glands. The mature...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Epidermoid cysts are common, typically benign skin growths.
  • While usually small, they can exceptionally develop into giant forms or, rarely, become malignant.

Observation:

  • This report details the first documented case of a giant epidermoid cyst occurring on the earlobe.
  • The patient presented with a large, pedunculated mass on the earlobe.

Findings:

  • The giant earlobe cyst was successfully and completely resected.
  • Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of an epidermoid cyst.
  • No recurrence was observed six months post-surgery.

Implications:

  • The earlobe should be considered a potential site for giant epidermoid cysts.
  • Routine histopathological evaluation of all excised cysts is recommended to ensure accurate diagnosis and exclude malignancy.
