Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between visual scanning patterns and facial emotion recognition across age groups.
  • To examine correlations between scanning parameters, executive function, and emotion recognition in older adults, considering age-related frontal lobe changes.

Main Methods:

  • Recorded eye movements of 16 OA (mean age 68.9) and 16 YA (mean age 19.2) while they identified facial emotions.
  • Participants categorized facial expressions and control images (landscapes).
  • Administered standard executive function tests to all participants.

Main Results:

  • OA were less accurate than YA in identifying fear and more accurate in identifying disgust.
  • OA fixated less on the upper half of faces across multiple emotions compared to YA.
