Summary

Ectopic cilia, or aberrant eyelashes, can occur in the palpebral conjunctiva, potentially acquired rather than congenital. These findings link ectopic cilia to the crypts of Henle and chronic inflammation.

Background:

  • Cilia are normally located at the eyelid margin.
  • Ectopic cilia are lash follicles found in abnormal eyelid positions.

Observation:

  • Two cases of ectopic cilia in the superior palpebral conjunctiva are reported.
  • Patients were a 31-year-old female and a 46-year-old male.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed ectopic cilia within epithelial pits resembling the crypts of Henle.
  • The hair follicle lacked a dermal papilla and hair matrix, suggesting an acquired origin.
  • Associated findings included granulation tissue and chronic inflammation.

Implications:

  • Ectopic cilia in the palpebral conjunctiva may be acquired, unlike congenital anterior ectopic cilia.
  • Aberrant cilia in this location are associated with crypts of Henle and chronic inflammation.
  • This presentation offers insight into unusual eyelash growth and associated ocular conditions.
