Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of two programs designed to increase mammography screening.
  • To assess the impact of an Educational plus Psychological (EP) program versus an Educational (E) program on screening intentions, knowledge, and compliance.

Main Methods:

  • 156 women were recruited and randomized into EP, E, or control (C) groups.
  • Data collected via pretest, posttest (EP and E groups), and telephone follow-up.
  • Interventions focused on education and psychological support regarding mammography.

Main Results:

  • EP group showed greater intention to obtain mammograms compared to the control group.
  • Both EP and E groups demonstrated increased knowledge and perceived benefits of mammography.
  • No significant difference in actual mammography compliance was observed among the three groups.

Conclusions:

  • Educational and psychological interventions can enhance screening intentions and knowledge.
  • Current program designs may not be sufficient to overcome barriers to actual mammography compliance.
  • Future interventions should focus on addressing practical barriers to increase screening rates.
