We introduce the NMR phased array, a novel technique using multiple NMR coils for enhanced imaging. This method significantly improves signal-to-noise ratio and resolution without increasing scan time.

Area of Science:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
  • Medical Physics
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Simultaneous acquisition and combination of data from multiple NMR coils are challenging.
  • Existing methods struggle with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and resolution over large fields-of-view (FOV).
  • Interactions between closely positioned coils degrade image quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a novel technique called the "NMR phased array" for simultaneous data acquisition and combination from multiple NMR coils.
  • To achieve the SNR and resolution of small surface coils over large FOVs without increasing imaging time.
  • To eliminate problematic interactions among nearby coils.

Main Methods:

  • The NMR phased array utilizes overlapping adjacent coils to achieve zero mutual inductance, thus eliminating interaction.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Low input impedance preamplifiers are attached to all coils to prevent interference.
  • An algorithm is derived for optimally combining data from phased array elements to maximize SNR.
  • Phased array imaging is demonstrated using spin-echo sequences on thoracic and lumbar spine phantoms.
  • Main Results:

    • The NMR phased array achieves the SNR and resolution of small surface coils over FOVs typically associated with body imaging.
    • Problematic interactions among coils are eliminated through coil overlap and preamplifier design.
    • Phased array imaging demonstrated high-resolution (512x512) spin-echo images of the spine.
    • Compared to a single coil, the NMR phased array yielded a 2X to 3X higher SNR at a depth of approximately 7 cm.

    Conclusions:

    • The NMR phased array technique significantly enhances SNR and resolution in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
    • This method offers a substantial improvement for clinical applications requiring high-quality imaging over large FOVs.
    • The NMR phased array is applicable to both MRI and spectroscopy across all pulse sequences.
