Summary

Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and proton beams offer effective soft-tissue sarcoma treatment. Proton therapy demonstrated superior dose homogeneity and reduced low-dose exposure to bone tissue.

Area of Science:

  • Radiation oncology
  • Medical physics

Background:

  • Soft-tissue sarcoma treatment requires precise radiation delivery.
  • Balancing target coverage with bone sparing is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) with proton beams for soft-tissue sarcoma.
  • To assess the potential for simultaneous target coverage and bone sparing.

Main Methods:

  • Ten leg soft-tissue sarcoma patients were studied.
  • Dose prescribed: 66.5 Gy to PTV, bone max dose <50 Gy.
  • Compared RapidArc (photons) and intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT).

Main Results:

  • Both VMAT and proton plans met target coverage and bone sparing criteria.
  • Proton plans showed significantly higher PTV dose homogeneity.
  • Protons minimized bone volumes receiving medium/low doses.

Conclusions:

  • Both VMAT and proton therapy achieve high plan quality for soft-tissue sarcoma.
  • Proton therapy offers advantages in dose distribution for bone sparing.
