New steroidal glycosides from Tribulus terrestris L
1School of Traditional Chinese Materia Medica, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, Shenyang 110016, China.
Two novel steroidal glycosides were identified in Tribulus terrestris L. Their complex structures were determined using advanced spectroscopic techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Phytochemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Background:
- Tribulus terrestris L. is a plant known for its traditional medicinal uses.
- Steroidal glycosides are a class of compounds with diverse biological activities.
- Investigating the chemical constituents of medicinal plants can lead to the discovery of novel compounds.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new steroidal glycosides from Tribulus terrestris L.
- To elucidate the chemical structures of these novel compounds.
- To contribute to the understanding of the phytochemical profile of Tribulus terrestris.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation using 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Analysis of spectroscopic data to determine the exact chemical structures.
Main Results:
- Two new steroidal glycosides were successfully isolated from Tribulus terrestris L.
- The structures were identified as 26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5α-furostan-12-one-20(22)-ene-3β,23,26-triol-3-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-β-D-galactopyranoside (1) and 26-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-5α-furostan-20(22)-ene-3β,23,26-triol-3-O-β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[β-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 → 3)]-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)]-β-D-galactopyranoside (2).
- The structural determination was confirmed through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis.
Conclusions:
- The study successfully identified and characterized two previously unknown steroidal glycosides from Tribulus terrestris.
- The findings expand the knowledge of the phytochemical diversity of Tribulus terrestris.
- These novel compounds may warrant further investigation for potential biological activities.
