Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Neurology
  • Parasitology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Amoebic meningoencephalitis is a rare but severe central nervous system infection.
  • Acanthamoeba species are known to cause opportunistic infections in various hosts.

Observation:

  • An adult ewe presented with anorexia and neurological signs including ataxia and circling.
  • Gross lesions were confined to the central nervous system, showing meningeal thickening and cerebral/cerebellar necrosis.

Findings:

  • Microscopic examination revealed necrotizing granulomatous meningoencephalitis, choroid plexitis, ventriculitis, and vasculitis.
  • Numerous amoebic trophozoites and some encysted forms, consistent with Acanthamoeba sp., were identified within affected neural tissues, particularly around blood vessels.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for Acanthamoeba sp. to cause severe neurological disease in sheep.
  • Understanding the pathology and causative agent is crucial for diagnosis and potential prevention strategies in livestock.
